What Australian Standards are applicable to the installation of solar power systems?

A number of Australian standards apply to the installation of solar systems. This means your solar installer needs to follow a wide range of rules and regulations. Some of these will take extra time to implement and the temptation can be there to cut some corners and save some time. That’s why the cheapest solar offers are not always the best. Australian Standards that apply include:

*AS/NZS 5033 Installation of photovoltaic (PV) arrays

* AS/NZS 3000 Electrical Wiring Rules

* AS 1768 Lightning Protection

* AS/NZS 1170.2 Wind Loads

Solar system installed following all Australian standards

* AS4777 Grid Connections of Energy Systems via Inverters

* AS 4509 Stand-alone power systems

  . part 2 Design guidelines

  . part 3 Installation and maintenance

  . AS 4086 Secondary batteries for SPS

  . part 2 Installation and maintenance

* Solar Panels must comply with IEC61730 Class A and either IEC61215 or IEC61646.

* Grid-connected inverters must comply with AS4777, AS3100 or IEC equivalent and have a current Certificate of Suitability from a state regulator

Many of these standards refer to other rules regulations and standards that are State based, including but not limited to:

* The Competition and Consumer Act 2010 (which incorporates the Australian Consumer Law)

* Relevant State and Territory work, health and safety laws

* Building contractor general licensing requirements

* Electrical trades person general licensing requirements

* The Home Warranty Insurance Act
